Lady Pirates End Season in District Finals vs. Humphrey

by Caitlin Casey

February 28, 2010

The Lady Pirates ended the season in a heart breaker game against Humphrey in the District finals 42-48.

"It was a good way to end the season. We played our hearts out," said senior, Alexa Heeney.

The game started out with a couple of quick lay-ups from Humphrey but the ladies fought back to tie the game and then take the lead. It was back and forth through the whole first half. Everyone played extremely well and the girls went into halftime with the lead, 26-21. Humphrey came out hard in the second half and tied the game but the Pirates stayed right with them and were down by 1 with about a minute left. A couple shots didn't go our way so we were forced to foul and unfortunately Humphrey made their free throws to stretch the lead to 6 by the time the last buzzer went off.

"It was a really good year for us. We improved a lot from the beginning to the end of the season. I had fun playing with all the girls and I'm really going to miss it," said senior, Caitlin Casey.

Leading scorer of the game was Marisa Blanke with 15 points. She did a really good job driving to the basket and drawing the fouls, making 5 out of 7 free throws. Marisa and Brittni Bormann also hit some important 3 pointers in the 2nd quarter to give us the lead going into the half. Brittni ended up with 12 points and had 5 steals. Caitlin Casey was leading rebounder with 13. She had 8 points and 6 blocked shots. Alexa Heeney led in assists with 4; she also had 11 rebounds and 5 points. Brittany Pallas only had 2 points but it was the 2 points that brought us within 1 at the end of the game. Everyone played really well individually and as a team. Special thanks to our coaches Lindsey Burback and Lewis Hackbart for making it such a fun season and pushing us to do our best.

Mrs. Burback said, "The girls played a tremendous game, but the ball just didn't fall our way. I am extremely proud of the way they played and how much they improved from the beginning of the season until now. The Lady Pirates need to be proud of how well they played."
