Mr. Becker Biography

by Lindsey Burback

November 19, 2007

Welcome to my page as Emerson-Hubbard’s Superintendent.  The following is some information about where I am from, my education, and my family.

I grew up in the town of Alton in northwest Iowa and graduated from Floyd Valley Public Schools.  I am the third oldest child in a family of eleven children.  My dad was a dentist in Alton and my mother started out as an elementary teacher.  Very soon though, she became a homemaker and in her “spare time” she did the books for the dental office.

When it came time for college I attended Wayne State and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Education with majors in both mathematics and physical education.  As a child growing up, my parents never asked if we wanted to attend college but only where did we plan to go to college.  All eleven children have college degrees and they all have advanced degrees beyond the bachelor level.  As you can see, education was very important to my parents.

My first teaching assignment was at Mead, Nebraska where I taught math, physical education, and coached three sports.  It was during my first year of teaching that I married Carol (Sobotka) Becker on December 31, 1977.  We are blessed to have three great children:  Sandra, Julie, and Joshua.  During my years at Mead I decided to go back to college.  I attended and graduated from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln with a Masters in Physical Education.

After seven years my family and I moved to Ogallala, Nebraska where I taught math and coached for sixteen years.  While in Ogallala, I received another endorsement for my Masters degree at Chadron State College.  I graduated from Chadron State with a K-12 Principal endorsement.

In 2000, our family moved back to eastern Nebraska when I accepted the 7-12 Principal position here at Emerson-Hubbard.  Like each place before, I again decided to attend college for another degree.  In December of 2002, I graduated from Wayne State College with my Specialist degree enabling me to accept the Superintendent’s position here at Emerson-Hubbard.  The one thing about education is, you are never too old to learn something new.  Over the years, because I have continued going back to college to get new degrees, our children keep asking me what I really want to be when I grow up – only time will tell.
