Mrs. Brownell - Biography

Welcome to the Emerson-Hubbard Learning Center!
I am Jane Brownell and have been the Elementary Special Education teacher in our school for 15 years! I live in Wakefield, Nebraska with my husband, Dick. Many of you might remember the old ”Dick and Jane” readers. Well, both of us learned to read from those, so you know we have been around awhile!
Originally, I am from a small farming community in South Dakota called Carpenter. I graduated from Willow Lake High School and then from the University of South Dakota in Elementary and Special Education. I taught school in Kansas City, Kansas for 5 years and then continued my education at the University of Kansas where I obtained an M.S. in Deaf Education. After my marriage, I moved to Nebraska and taught special education in Wakefield for 13 years. During this time, I attended Wayne State College and received an Endorsement in Learning Disabilities.
Dick and I have 3 children. Brett is 26 and works for Heritage Homes in Wayne on the ‘set up’ crew for the modular homes. Our daughter, Maggie, 25, is a pharmacist, and lives in San Diego, where she is a residency intern at the University of San Diego Hospital. Anna, our baby, is a senior at Wakefield Community School, so we will be the ‘empty nesters’ next year! I am hoping that teaching, golfing, gardening, and reading will keep me busy enough that I won’t suffer from being ’kidless’.
I have truly enjoyed my years with the students and staff in Emerson. Each day offers new joys and challenges. Successes of the students, both small and great, continue to reinforce my decision that teaching is one of the most rewarding and fulfilling careers in life.
Please feel free to call, visit, or e-mail me if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks!
