Autobiography

by Carol Becker

January 02, 2008

I knew in 2nd grade that I wanted to be a teacher.  That year I was taught by Sister Georgiana and I wanted to be just like her! The notion of being a nun even crossed my mind.  However, I'm sure my three children are grateful that I didn't choose that vocation!

With my career choice set, it seemed obvious that I should attend a Teacher's College at either Kearney State or Wayne State.  Honestly, I chose WSC because of the beautiful campus and small town appeal.  Through mutual college friends I met my husband, Tom Becker.  We settled in Wahoo, NE and Tom taught in Mead, while I taught Junior High Social Studies in Weston. After seven years in Wahoo we moved to western Nebraska and lived and taught in Ogallala for 16 years.  It was the High School Media Specialist who encouraged me to get my endorsement in Library/Media.  Over the course of several summers I took classes at UNK and Chadron State.  During that time I was operating a Pre-School in our home.  My first position as a Media Specialist was in the Ogallala Middle School.  After four years, I moved to the High School Media position and was there four years also.

It was then time for another move as Tom's career in education was evolving into Administration.  It seemed odd, but comfortable, to be back in the Wayne area again.  I was able to teach in Ponca for five years before accepting the K-12 Media Specialist position at Emerson-Hubbard.  Tom and I are happy to have returned to Northeast Nebraska, as is our family.  Our 2 daughters are living and working in Lincoln and Kearney, and our son seems to have inherited the "teaching gene" and is working toward an Elementary Education degree at WSC.
