Mr. Schrage's Biography

by Gary Schrage

January 02, 2008

Hello.  My name is Gary Schrage and I serve as the junior/senior high principal here at Emerson-Hubbard.  I grew up on a farm near Elgin, NE, in a family of seven children -- two brothers, four sisters and one bathroom!  Growing up on a farm with many siblings made for a great childhood, but they eventually made me leave.  I received my Bachelor of Arts degree from Wayne State College, served two years in the U. S. Army, and began my teaching career in western Iowa.  Besides teaching, I've also coached, directed plays and musicals, sponsored the school newspaper and served as a student council advisor.  I earned my masters degree from Drake University and since then served as a secondary principal in three different districts in Iowa.  I had always wanted to return to my home state, so I am very happy to be back in Cornhusker country.

My wife, Janice, and I have three grown children: Michael, Tina (husband Aaron), and Scott.  Coal, our dog, has been with us for 10 years as well.  Family activities are important to us, and we try to get together often and especially for holidays.

In my spare time I like to read, write, and collect antiques.  I used to hunt and fish quite a bit, but the prime time for those activities are some of my busiest times at school.  I am rather fanatical about Husker football but am fairly normal otherwise.

I have a great deal of faith in young people.  I think that in some ways they face more difficult challenges and futures than did my generation.  They need our experience, our trust, and our support.  In my experience when we challenge them, they respond and show us what they are capable of.  It has made my career in education very rewarding indeed.
