by Max Renning

September 08, 2009

The Emerson Hubbard Pirates opened their season on Friday night against the Howells Bobcats, the topped ranked team in class D-1. Howells scored early and often in a 62-0 win. They jumped out to a 22-0 lead in the first 3 minutes of the game and the Pirates never recovered.

"We knew they were a good team going in," said Coach Hackbart. "The effort was there, but there was a lack of execution. It was a tough way to start the year, but we should have a lot of wins ahead of us."

Senior center Trent Stork said "The effort was there, but they were just too good to stop."

There were very few bright spots for the Pirates. The highlight of the night was a 30 yard run by sophomore wingback Austen "Rooster" Hogan early in the 4th quarter. The leading rusher on the night was senior tailback Scott Servine, who rushed for 47 yards on 10 carries. Senior quarterback Max Renning was 2-12 passing on the night with both receptions going to AJ Bormann for 52 yards. Renning and senior saftey Justin Hogan were leading tacklers on the night. Renning had 6 unassisted and 2 assisted while Hogan had 4 unassisted and 5 assisted.

The Pirates continue there season and try to bounce back next Friday, September 11th, when they travel to Pender for a 7 o'clock match-up with the Pendragons. Pender will also be looking for their first win on the young season as they lost 62-46 in Hartington last week.
