Lady Pirates Drop 2 in Pender Triangular

by Caitlin Casey

October 02, 2009

The lady pirates played two tough matches on the first day of October, but fell short of the win to both Neligh and Pender.

Neligh was the first game of the night and the lady pirates came out strong but fell to Neligh in the first set 25-22. The second set was back and forth all the way to 25, but once again Neligh came out on top after a nice hit off the block touched the floor. Neligh won the second set 27-25.

Top servers of the game were Brittni Bormann with 10 good serves and 2 aces, Caitlin Casey with 6 good serves and 1 ace and Alexa Heeney who went 9 for 9 behind the line.

The seniors,Heeney and Casey, used their height to get a combination of 5 ace blocks. Heeney also had 2 kills and Casey had 4 off of Jenna Roeber's 6 assists.

"After a rough week and a half, the girls came out strong and showed their competitive edge again," said head coach, Traci Heikes.

The ladies carried that competitive edge over into the second game of the night against the Pendragons. The first set ended in favor of Pender, 25-17. Brittni Bormann had two kills and Alexa Heeney had one. Best server in the first set was Danielle Lux who went 7 for 7. Both left and middles contributed in the blocking department. Between Bormann, Casey, Heeney, and Marisa Blanke there was 8 ace blocks.

"We blocked really well in the first set of the game, which made up for some of our hitting and passing errors," said senior, Alexa Heeney.

In the second set Mrs. Heikes switched it up but the ladies still played hard and worked together. The Pendragons came out on top again, 25-8, to take the game. Best diggers of the night were Bormann who had 6 good ups out of 8 attempts, Casey who went 5 for 5 and Blanke who went 5 for 7. Danielle Lux was also best server in the second set, making 3 of 4.

The lady pirates are continuing to improve as the season progresses so hopefully next week they can get a couple more wins under their belt against Winnebago and Homer. Good Luck Ladies!
