March 01, 2010
The Emerson-Hubbard Pirates have qualified for the state tournament in Lincoln, Nebraska for the first time since 2003 and only the third time in school history. They did it on Tuesday night with a 55-49 win over Humphrey High.
The Pirates started out fast, taking a 12-9 lead after the first quarter, but Humphrey had a run late in the first half to tie it at 27.
The third quarter would be the difference, as E-H started the quarter fast and never looked back, taking a six point lead into the final quarter. From there on, the Pirates controlled the clock and went 5 for 7 from the free throw line in the last two minutes to put the game away.
AJ Bormann and Scott Servine led the team with 13 points a piece, including Bormann's 6 for 6 performance from the line. Derick Lux and Max Renning each had 8 for the Pirates and Austin Gutzmann had 7. Adam Drieling pitched in 4, including some clutch free throws, and Justin Hogan had 2 points to round out the scoring for the night. Scott Servine and Derick Lux also had 4 assists each and Gutzmann pulled down nine rebounds to lead the team.
The state tournament will include top seeded Freeman taking on Sandhills/Thedford, #2 Overton against Randolph, Humphrey St. Francis and Exeter-Milligan, and a rematch for E-H as they will take on Humphrey High again in the first round. Humphrey High qualified by getting one of the two wildcard spots.
The game will be played Thursday, March 11th at 10:45 AM at Lincoln Northeast High School. For more information, including driving directions to Lincoln and Northeast High School, visit the NSAA website at www.nsaahome.org
